Skywatches

Let's Look Up!

The South Jersey Astronomy Club hosts public skywatches on the recreation field at the Belleplain State Forest several times through the year.

Skywatch events are posted on this website, on the Groups.io site, and the club’s Facebook page.

Skywatches begin at varying times (announced in advanced), and admission is free!   Once in Belleplain State Forest, follow the signs to the public parking lot (free) and then walk the short distance to the observing field.

Telescopes will be set up to provide beautiful views of objects in the night sky.  Just walk up to any telescope and ask a SJAC member what they are viewing and if you can take a look.

Rain or cloudy conditions on Friday night skywatches will move the event to Saturday night.  Bad weather on Saturday will cancel the event.  Any changes or cancellations will be posted on this website, the Groups.io site, and the club’s Facebook page.

TIPS FOR SKYWATCH VISITORS…

  • Please dress appropriately on cold nights. Temps drop after sunset, so be sure to bring a jacket, hat, and wear good shoes.
  • Consider bug spray on warm nights.
  • PLEASE use only RED flashlights (or white with red cellophane) on the field.  Please avoid shining your light toward others;  kindly point the beam down in front of you.
  • Bring a folding chair, some snacks, and hot drinks, but PLEASE do not leave any any garbage or other items behind.
  • Ask members for club literature or ask them questions you have about the club.
  •  Enjoy the views through the scopes and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
  • If you already have a telescope, feel free to bring it along.  Arrive early so you have adequate time to set up.
  • You can also appreciate the night sky using just your naked eyes, or a pair of binoculars.
  • If you bring anything which can become litter please take it out of the forest with you.
Additional event and Park information is available by contacting the Belleplain State Forest Ranger Station at 609-861-2404.

TIPS FOR MEMBERS SUPPORTING SKYWATCHES…

  • Members are encouraged to bring telescopes.
  • Those bringing gear can arrive early and drive onto the field to setup.
  • Face vehicles toward the southwest edge of the field to facilitate early departures and minimize impact on night vision.
